Web Applications Developer

Serve as a web applications developer for the Brand Communications group in University Relations. Research, analyze, and recommend strategies to best leverage technology in support of University Relations goals and priorities. Develop templates, content management applications, and new web tools and techniques that best leverage web technology. Coordinate and/or implement the design, development, and maintenance of externally-facing web sites and related web-based applications

Lead requirements gathering meetings with project stakeholders from many levels of the university to determine business and communications needs and objectives. Translate needs into functional and technical requirements. Work with University Relations management to help plan web projects and define their scope and success metrics. Assist other University Relations web developers and act as a consultant and advisor for a wide variety of technical communications projects. Lead Web Technologies in research and development of new technologies, best practices, current trends, and evolving directions in the field of digital communications technologies

Engage in conversation and planning around communications plans. Connect expertise in web technologies with meeting communications goals. Apply knowledge in web technologies to solve communications problems. Apply an understanding of the 'bigger picture' in proposing technical solutions, keeping in mind the mission and strategic goals of the department, unit and the University

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in computer science (or web applications programming) with 5 to 7 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Extensive experience in HTML, CSS, Javascript/jQuery, ColdFusion, PHP, SQL, relational database schema creation, responsible coding practices such as optimization of queries and HTTP requests
  • Experience working in UNIX, Apache, and Oracle environment preferred. Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent software experience required
  • Must have strong organizational, interpersonal, collaboration, presentation, and communications skills
  • Must have extensive experience working as part of a diverse team of creative professionals, including project managers and non-technical colleagues
  • Must have ability to work and communicate effectively with varied constituencies at many levels of an organization. Must be able to work effectively in a dynamic, deadline-driven, complex, team-based environment with multiple competing priorities
  • Must have ability to compare multiple technical solutions, communicate the strengths and weaknesses of each, and assist development team members in choosing an appropriate development path
  • Must have ability to understand customer needs/requirements and develop and implement appropriate solutions
  • Must have well-developed problem-solving abilities, analytical, reasoning and judgment skills. Position is designated as key personnel in emergencies and must be available for periodic off-hours and on-call work

Preferred:

  • Git repositories, application frameworks, ColdFusion, AWS experience desirable
  • Working knowledge of Vue / React / Angular as well as some experience with build scripts for JavaScript and CSS is preferred
  • Background or experience applying web technologies to marketing objectives, as well as accessibility standards, SEO, and analytics proficiencies are desired
