Your Role and Responsibilities
Background:
Our group creates innovation for the Hybrid Cloud Platform. We focus on cloud-native system architectures, performance, and programming models and tooling. Our work supports both solution developers and operations staff. For example, our group created what is now Apache OpenWhisk, used as the basis for the IBM Cloud Functions offering in both public and private clouds. We have expanded this work into many areas, including a framework for creating heterogeneous composition of cloud services, defining and developing cloud native operators to normalize how cloud solution patterns can be consumed by developers, event-driven architectures and solution patterns, and defining the future application stack for constructing cloud-native applications. The work in the group directly supports the mission of the Hybrid Cloud and AI business organizations. We have helped set overall strategy for multi-cloud management and continue to apply our innovations to support AI Open Scale. We advance science by publishing in academic conferences and submitting patents.

Description:
We have an opening for the position of Visiting Scientist for Hybrid Cloud Platforms, for performing foundational research in a wide range of topics such as performance analysis and performance enhancements of current serverless runtimes like Apache OpenWhisk, applications of serverless runtimes to high performance computing, optimization of serverless systems requiring data intensive operations, modeling and tooling for event-driven architectures, programming model support for cloud native applications, visualization, etc.
We are particularly interested in candidates with skills to explore a wide range of technology required for enabling developers to build the next-generation of cloud-native applications.The position of a Visiting Scientist is meant for candidates currently employed at leading academic institutions conducting world-class research related to Cloud Computing, with publications in top-tier conferences and journals. The purpose of the position to provide an opportunity for the candidate to collaborate with people in IBM Research in exciting areas in cloud computing and push the frontiers of science and technology. Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team are essential.


Required Professional and Technical Expertise
  • Expert level experience in General Programming skills in one or more of these languages: Java, Javascript, Python, C++, Node.js, LISP, Go, Swift etc.
  • Expert level Communication Skills
  • Advanced experience in Software engineering practices including agile processes


Preferred Professional and Technical Expertise
  • Expert experience developing solutions in a cloud computing offering
  • Expert level experience using Kubernetes and familiarity with Knative
  • Expert level experience in serverless development patterns, systems, application
  • Expert level experience with high performance computing systems and/or applications
