Washington University in St. Louis, a leading national research university, invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice Chancellor for Information Technology & Chief Information Officer (CIO). The CIO leads institution-wide strategy for IT and oversees the delivery of current and new IT systems and services by the University’s central IT function. The CIO contributes to the development of overarching strategies for computing resources that support teaching, learning, research, and patient care, and therefore shapes and advances all the mission areas of the University. Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Administrative Officer with secondary reporting lines and accountability to the Provost and the Executive Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs (who also serves as the Dean of the Medical School), the CIO is a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet and a key institutional leader.

The Vice Chancellor for Information Technology & Chief Information Officer is responsible for the development and delivery of an array of central IT services and systems, for providing strategic and operational guidance to University leadership on all aspects of information technology policy and planning, and for collaborating with decentralized IT directors in the provision of technology solutions and services that advance the mission and facilitate the operation of the University.

The CIO leads through vision, collaboration, example, and influence to develop a shared vision for IT programs, priorities, and investments. Establishing overall direction, vision, and policy for information technology at the University, the CIO will work closely with the Deputy University CIO / Medical School CIO to ensure that the particular IT needs of the School of Medicine, the largest component element of the University, and particularly its clinical departments and their relationship with its hospital partner, BJC HealthCare, are served within the context of policy and priorities.

Washington University seeks a CIO with the vision and leadership qualities to articulate a strategic view of IT that will identify the investments in technology, people, policy, and governance that the University needs to make in order to remain world-class. S/he will be a thought-leader in the intersection of IT and academic mission, leading by virtue of domain expertise, collaboration skills, and the ability to align stakeholders around the role of IT in the University’s mission. The CIO will bring experience with and expertise in the range of established and emerging IT systems and services relevant to a top-tier research university with a large medical school characterized by world-class basic, translational, and clinical research programs and a $1 billion clinical enterprise. Successful candidates will have experience with major ERP implementations. An advanced degree in information systems, information technology, or relevant other field is required.
