With broad impact across UCSD's billion-dollar research enterprise, Research IT Services provides a variety of digital technology services to faculty, research staff, postdoctoral and graduate students, including all academic departments, schools and divisions. Research IT coordinates across campus IT providers (including ITS, SDSC, Calit2, the Library), the Schools, Divisions, Departments and labs, the Office of Research Affairs, the Office of Contract and Grant Administration, the Office of Post-Award Financial Services, and other critical stakeholders to deliver coordinated services critical to all aspects of the research enterprise. Research IT teams include Research Administrative Applications, which develops a portfolio of tools supporting the full lifecycle of a grant, from the proposal stage through administration to reporting, and the Digital Technology Resource Advisory, which provides direct outreach and resource recommendations to faculty, conducts investigation & integration of new technologies, and coordinates between campus technology providers to deliver solutions directly to researchers.


Founded by Nobel laureates and members of the National Academy of Sciences, our Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics, and Physics have all played a central role in UC San Diego’s rapid rise to national and international prominence. Just as it was at its founding, the Division of Physical Sciences is broad in scope and inherently interdisciplinary.


Researchers within the division delve into scientific and computational issues that are of critical relevance to all facets of society. Members of the Division of Physcial address climate change, fabricate nanoparticles to image tumors and deliver drugs, probe the fundamental nature of matter, trace the evolution of the universe, hunt for elusive sub-atomic particles, design detection systems for toxins and explosives, to name only some of the faculty’s achievements.


The Systems Integration Engineer is colocated in the Division of Physical Sciences to provide in-depth research technology support for Physical Sciences researchers. As a highly skilled members of the campus' research IT system integration team, provides integration services across the academic / research enterprise, with a focus on the Division of Physical Sciences. Designs, develops, and creates complex and comprehensive, end-to-end technology solutions for research labs across the Division of Physical Sciences and other campus departments/divisions/schools. Develops applications and systems control software to support demos and proofs of concept for funding agencies. Provides an advanced level of consultation and in-depth collaboration on complex systems to researchers, labs, and academic department staff in Physical Sciences on digital technologies and their integration in the research environment.


• Employee must be available to work evenings and weekends.Employee must be available to travel as required.



• Applies advanced systems and software integration concepts, and location or institutional objectives, to resolve highly complex issues where analysis of systems and software requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors to resolve and implement medium to large projects of broad scope and complexity.

• Regularly resolves highly complex business processes, system functionality, implementation issues and system and software integration issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.

• Selects tools, methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results.

• Gives technical presentations to associated team, other technical units and management. Evaluates new technologies including performing moderate to complex cost / benefit analyses.

• Advanced knowledge of systems integration deploying complex systems integration solutions. Demonstrated advanced ability to integrate software, hardware, and cloud services in a scientific research environment.

• Advanced skills associated with system integration design, modification, implementation and deployment in a complex environment. Demonstrated ability to integrate and manage high-performance compute/storage/network systems, including experience using and tuning 10G connections, tuning operating systems to maximize data throughput, and managing block-, file-, and object-based storage and various filesystems (e.g., NFS, ZFS) under Linux.

• Demonstrated ability to create software specifications. Demonstrated advanced ability to develop software, especially systems control software, using Python, Bash, and Unix/Linux shell scripts.

• Experience with systems administration and physics-related application software such as LaTex, Mathematica, Matlab, NetVault Backup, vmd.

• Demonstrated experience with multiple forms of UNIX/Linux, including their integration and interoperability. Hands-on system administration experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
