The Systems Architect 6 Portfolio Architect (PA) is a senior level IT leader within Wholesale and Wealth Technology (WWT) Planning & Architecture responsible for working closely with Wells Fargo IT and Business leaders across Wealth, Brokerage, Retirement, Trust and the Wells Fargo Investment Institute (WFII) to lead the definition of complex IT and business solution plans that enable achieving strategic objectives according to a defined vision, strategy, multi-year roadmap and established transformation themes. The primary role of the PA is to define, track and maintain a multi-year portfolio plan that identifies critical gaps and opportunities across related business functions aligned to a business capability model, target architecture and transformation objectives. The PA is expected to become a subject matter expert that demonstrates product, business operations and related technology knowledge within their assigned domains such as Wealth Investment and Fiduciary Services, Brokerage Clearing and Settlement, Advice and Planning, Independent Brokerage Services, Investment Portfolio Management, Trading and Trust Administration. In addition to business domain expertise, the PA is also required to have subject matter expertise in one or more application development or system integration patterns such as object oriented programming, service oriented architecture, messaging, complex event processing, business process management, identity and access management and third-party software integration.


  • Ensure complex business solutions are designed to meet business and IT strategic goals with qualified business case and return on investment justifications
  • Collaborate with Business and IT strategic planning partners to guide incremental IT investment and delivery decisions based on defined vision, strategy, roadmap and portfolio plans
  • Provide IT architectural governance ensuring WWT and enterprise architecture patterns are being followed and solutions align to published portfolio plans
  • Serve as the lead architect and provide guidance for complex, cross line of business programs and strategic initiatives
  • Serve as the lead architect over a large number of related projects providing portfolio plan guidance while partnering with other architects such as Solution Architects, Application Architects and Enterprise Architects
  • Provide domain expertise and leadership supporting key business functions across a wide range of account types, products and services such as investment and financial planning, advice, retail brokerage, retirement accounts, banking products, investment portfolio management, self-directed client investments and trust administration that are serviced across multiple business channels
  • Collaborate with IT, Business, Risk, Security and Supply Chain partners to provide architecture guidance and domain expertise regarding buy vs. build decisions, third-party vendor solution due diligence, alignment to enterprise standards and impacts to aligned portfolio plans
  • Contribute to cross functional IT and Business portfolio plan communities responsible for creating, maintaining and communicating aligned portfolio plans

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of information technology systems design and planning experience; in systems, applications, or architecture
  • 5+ years of leadership or management experience

  • Extensive technical skills and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of an entire line of business or infrastructure sub-domain
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to interact with all levels of an organization
  • Ability to influence across all organizational levels, particularly senior management
  • Ability to influence and build relationships with LOB stakeholders, technology CIO leadership, external service providers, and architecture teams
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, and Project) skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of technical leadership including: strategic and enterprise architectural direction for an organization
  • Knowledge and understanding of project management principles: defining future state, gap analysis, and scope management
  • A BS/BA degree or higher in information technology

Other Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in Financial Services industry including Wealth Management, Brokerage, Capital Markets, Lending and principles of investing and securities trading
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication and relationship skills, including experience presenting, collaborating and building trusted relationships with executive management, senior management and technical peers to influence direction
  • Experience using architecture modeling tools
  • Working knowledge of one or many industry standard architecture frameworks and service landscapes including ITIL, COBIT, IT4IT, TOGAF and BIAN
  • Experience with SOA (Services Oriented Architecture) or micro services
  • Experience with BPM (Business Process Management) and Process Automation
  • Experience with of Event Driven Architecture and Messaging Integration
  • Experience with Modern Web Development concepts (e.g. HTML5, Responsive Web Design)
  • Understanding of XML, JSON, REST and FIX Protocol
