Position Summary:

As a member of the executive team, the Senior Vice President, Global Communications is a principal strategist and advisor to the CEO and executive staff and sets the strategic direction for ICANN’s communications around the world in support of the strategic plan. This position also acts as a communications advisor to the ICANN Board. In addition, this position is responsible for all aspects of internal and external communications delivery. The Senior Vice President leads the Global Communications department and Language Services team with direct reports located in all regional offices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a member of ICANN’s Executive Team
  • Provide communications counsel to ICANN’s Board, President and CEO and Executive Team
  • Conceive, develop and implement the global communications strategy and its corporate and issue-specific messages
  • Promote greater global engagement in ICANN’s complex multi-stakeholder community, expanding awareness of ICANN, its work and its role in global Internet governance
  • Deliver a professional content, social media, digital, marketing and outreach strategy, built on:
    • Top quality content and social media including icann.org
    • Globally relevant and compelling content strategy and creation
    • Effective branding, including corporate identity and design
    • Clear, concise and compelling written marketing materials, including informative, persuasive and well-edited online and print publications
    • Strategic external sponsorship
  • Generate and expand media coverage of ICANN and its work:
    • Supervise the development of global media relations and generate positive press coverage in targeted media markets and more broadly
    • Develop and maintain strong media contacts globally
    • Manage the press team
  • Serve as a lead ICANN spokesperson
  • Lead regional communications and Regional Office communications support in partnership with Managing Directors and Regional Vice Presidents
  • Partner with subject matter experts on issue area communications
  • Lead and manage internal communications for a globally diverse organization
  • Support community communications as appropriate in partnership with community
  • Protect and enhance ICANN’s reputation, and advance the ICANN multistakeholder model
  • Drive the awareness of international public meetings to maximize their communications impact, increase participation and the effectiveness of the community’s work and enhance ICANN’s reputation
  • Supervise the Language Services team and the delivery of high quality services
  • Direct the development and implementation of ICANN’s language policy
  • Leverage and lead a strong, cohesive and effective professional global communications and Language Services team
  • Manage the departmental budget
  • Oversee Speakers Bureau
  • Oversee, support and, as appropriate, write CEO and executive level speeches and communications
  • Educate staff on communications skills and processes as part of the broader internal communications effort
  • Other duties as assigned by the CEO

Essential Job Functions:

  • Lead the Global Communications Department
  • Develop effective content, social media and outreach strategy
  • Supervise media relations and strategic press management
  • Set communications strategy and oversee its implementation
  • Lead effective and engaged internal communications
  • Develop and supervise implementation of language services policy


  • Experience:
    • A minimum of twenty years of senior level communications experience in a non-profit or tech environment, covering media, marketing and outreach
    • Recognized expertise in global communications – public affairs, advocacy, media relations, content strategy and social media and internal communications in an international organization
    • A minimum of eighteen years of overall related experience
    • Significant previous experience providing counsel to Boards and CEO level executives
    • Significant previous experience leading sizeable senor internationally diverse teams
    • Significant previous experience as a spokesman for high-profile organizations and individuals
    • Experience hiring and managing consulting firms and vendors
    • Undergraduate degree required; post-graduate degree in communications or related field is desired
  • Skills:
    • Effortless effective communications: articulate, thorough and persuasive verbal abilities; clear andprecise writing skills, with exceptional creative and business writing/editing talent
    • Proven ability to communicate complex and controversial subjects to nontechnical audiences
    • Fluent English required; at least one additional language at business competency level strongly desired
    • Multicultural/multinational experience strongly preferred
    • Ability to drive teams forward to reachchallenging goals, with strong skills in developing and nurturing internaltalent, promoting diversity and forging alliances
    • Excellent organizational and management skills
    • First rate influencing and networkingskills, with ability to collaborate across units within the organizationand the multi-stakeholder community
