 Sustainability Projects Specialist

SFO seeks a Sustainability Projects Specialist for our Environmental Policy and Sustainability team. Join an innovative world class Airport whose goal is achieve campus-wide zero net energy and carbon neutrality by 2021. You will support Airport projects and tenants in achieving all environmental requirements and SFO-specific performance standards within newly constructed and currently operating leaseholds; perform plan checks and project site reviews during construction of all new tenant spaces prior to occupancy; serve as Project Management Support Services staff for the Airport’s Zero Energy & Resilient Outcomes Committee and tenant-focused sub-committee; review tenant commission plans and activities, conduct onsite energy, water, and materials assessments, and when needed, track campus-wide conservation measures and investments for cost savings and emissions outcomes across the Airport.  Highly desired candidate has LEED AP with Specialty BD+C and/or ID+C and working knowledge of LEED, Arc, Parksmart, Envision and International Living Future Institute Rating Systems. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and 6 years of experience; OR, Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in course work outlined in official job announcement and 5 years of experience;

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university and 5 years of experience; OR, Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in course work outlined in official job announcement, and 4 years of experience. 
Applicants may substitute up to 2 years of the required education with additional qualifying experience One year (2000 hours) of additional qualifying experience will be considered equivalent to 30 semester units/45 quarter units.

The essential functions of this position include:
  • Support building design and construction projects for the Airport and its RDM & AVM Tenants, with a professional focus on sustainable design and building practices, as well as review responsibility over the facility operating phase (i.e. monitoring of energy and water use, onsite materials management) with a goal of attaining zero net energy, carbon neutrality and zero waste across all delivered projects.
  • Conduct plan checks and field inspections for RDM and AVM tenant projects to verify compliance with SFO’s sustainability and healthy building/materials specifications and state/municipal green building and energy codes.
  • Develop and execute strategies and projects to address issues such as energy use, resource conservation, recycling, pollution reduction, waste elimination, transportation, education, and building design.
  • Collaborate with facilities, architecture, engineering, project management, tenants, finance, and planning teams to collectively meet program goals.
  • Research environmental sustainability and healthy material/building issues, concerns, or stakeholder interests. Research and review regulatory, technical, or market issues related to sustainability to stay current on industry trends and related regulatory issues in order to enhance the program, and to educate and train teams of associates and subcontractors.
  • Conduct meetings with Airport stakeholders to review sustainability related scope of Airport projects.
  • Provide support to External Affairs when creating marketing or outreach media, such as brochures or web sites, to communicate sustainability issues, procedures, or objectives that convey the approaches and outcomes of sustainable tenant projects.
  • Develop methodologies to assess the viability or success of sustainability initiatives and programs, considering factors such as cost effectiveness, technical feasibility, and acceptance.   
  • Develop sustainability project goals, objectives, initiatives, or strategies in collaboration with other sustainability professionals.
  • Collect information about waste stream management and long-term sustainability building practices to inform decision-makers.
  • Identify and procure needed resources to implement sustainability programs or projects. 
  • Write, review and edit project specifications and Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
  • Write grant applications, rebate applications, or project proposals to secure funding for sustainability projects.
  • Monitor and evaluate effectiveness of sustainability programs and energy, water, materials and carbon-reduction measures implemented in Airport projects.
  • Identify and track sustainability indicators, such as energy use, natural resource use, waste generation, and recycling.
  • Develop reports or presentations to communicate the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives.
  • Ensure programs developed are in compliance with all contracts, laws, rules, and regulations governing program activities at local, state, and national level.
  • Supervise employees, interns, volunteers working on sustainability projects. 
  • Provide training and guidance for newly selected tenants.  

Desirable Qualifications
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred to hiring.

  • Ability to research and assist in evaluating green building materials and products
  • Ability to prepare and record project data related to sustainability strategies via third-party rating systems and/or organizational performance tracking tool
  • Architecture or Engineering professional degree
  • LEED AP with Specialty – preferably BD+C and/or ID+C (if candidate has not completed the testing for this requirement, the candidate would have 6 months after hire to obtain this credential) – please attach Credential Certificate as proof to application   
  • Working knowledge of the LEED, Arc, Parksmart, Envision, International Living Future Institute Rating Systems       
  • Ability to conduct plan checks and onsite inspections, or to do so following hands-on training Applied knowledge of CA Energy Code and San Francisco Environment Code        
  • Experience with applying sustainability principles and rating systems across building (architecture or engineering) lifecycles - design, construction, commissioning, activation, operation
  • Ability to effectively analyze and develop programs, policies, and initiatives, supported by business case metrics and financials
  • Ability to develop performance measurement systems and initiate continuous improvement processes (e.g. ISO 9001 or 14001, ISO 50001, Six Sigma)
  • Must be detail oriented with excellent written and verbal communication, negotiation & presentation skills. Strong working knowledge of G Suite and Microsoft Office software
  • Computer proficiency using spreadsheets, presentation software, databases, and online data processing applications
  • Proficiency with CAD, Energy modeling, Lifecycle Cost Analysis Tools (Revit, Autocase), ArcView GIS
  • Ability to work independently and in a multifunctional, geographically dispersed team
  • Demonstrated leadership/management skills
  • Proven record of providing excellent internal and external customer service and stakeholder engagement
  • Ability to quickly develop rapport with a range of audiences, technical and non-technical
  • Interest in broader sustainability issues related to green building operations, energy & water efficiency, carbon management within building and construction projects, healthy materials, indoor air quality monitoring
  • Proficiency with, or ability to learn new, software such as CAD (Revit), Energy modeling, Lifecycle Cost Analysis Tools (Autocase), ArcView GIS
