NREL is seeking a student intern to support analysis in the Modeling and Analysis Group, Integrated Applications Center, Energy Systems Integration directorate.  The Center helps clients including federal agencies, state and local governments, communities, and the private sector to develop energy strategies, analyze opportunities, make energy decisions, and implement an integrated portfolio of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies to meet energy goals.

In this internship, the student will contribute towards analysis of optimal energy system sizing and dispatch for behind-the meter systems including PV, battery energy storage, and electric vehicles paired with building loads. The analysis will be performed using REopt.  REopt is used to evaluate renewable energy, storage, and conventional energy options and recommend a mix of technologies and operating strategies that minimizes the lifecycle cost of energy for a site. REopt aggregates energy systems data including electric and thermal energy use, utility rates, incentives, and renewable energy resource data to inform technology and economic decisions.

The intern will present the results of the analysis to NREL’s Intelligent Campus team. The analysis will include sensitivity studies to explore trade-offs between upfront capital costs and bill savings achieved with energy storage systems (eg. peak shaving). Alternative billing programs will also be explored, such as participating in demand response or unique tariff structures – which will require modifying the model.

Specific Job Duties include:

  • Evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects using REopt
  • Present results to NREL staff and develop reports and presentations
  • Adapt existing code to accommodate unique tariff structures

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in a degree earning program or have graduated from one within the past several months
  • GAMS, MATLAB, Xpress or other optimization software experience
  • Programming experience: fluency in Python and ability to quickly pick up other languages
