NREL is seeking a student intern to support energy optimization model development in the Modeling and Analysis Group, Integrated Applications Center (IAC), Energy Systems Integration (ESI) directorate.  The Center helps clients including federal agencies, state and local governments, communities, and the private sector develop energy strategies, analyze opportunities, make energy decisions, and implement an integrated portfolio of renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE) technologies to meet energy goals.

In this internship, the student will contribute to the development of the REopt modeling platform for energy systems integration and optimization. REopt is used to evaluate renewable energy, storage, and conventional energy options and recommend a mix of technologies and operating strategies that minimizes the lifecycle cost of energy for a site. REopt aggregates energy systems data including electric and thermal energy use, utility rates, incentives, and renewable energy resource data to inform technology and economic decisions. The intern will assist in developing and testing the combined heat and power (CHP) and hot and chilled water storage tank components of the REopt Lite model. The intern will conduct analysis using REopt to explore CHP and thermal storage tank applications based on technology characteristics, building types, load profiles, utility rate structures, and other location-specific characteristics. The intern may assist in developing and validating the hot and chilled water thermal energy storage (TES) models.

Specific Job Duties include:

  • Develop, test, and document REopt case studies with CHP and TES technologies along with other renewable energy and storage technologies
  • Develop and validate the hot and chilled water storage tank models
  • Streamline post-processing procedures for REopt results to develop a standardized outputs package for CHP analyses
  • Present results to clients and write reports

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in a degree earning program or have graduated from one in the past several months
  • Programming experience: proficiency in Python and data analysis
  • Experience or relevant coursework analyzing power generation and thermal systems, including part-load performance
