The Storage Engineer position will be responsible for engineering, configuring, installing, and maintaining enterprise SAN/NAS, in a multi-platform mission critical environment, as well as backup and recovery systems critical to data protection and business continuity. This position requires extensive experience and a high level of technical expertise of the technology under the scope of the role. The candidate must have a functional understanding of disaster recovery between multiple datacenters. Under supervision from the Director, the Storage Engineer will participate in departmental and business unit projects by assisting in the development of project plans, documentation, and performing of project tasks. This person will be responsible for daily system maintenance tasks, service delivery, system functionality and availability and keeping technology current with the industry standards and best practices. This person will be responsible for making recommendations for forecasting the growth of the SAN/NAS and backup/recovery environments, and designing/engineering recommendations for upgrades, technology shifts and redesigns to stay current, competitive and provide an optimized backend infrastructure. This person will be required to participate in an on-call support rotation.


Essential Job Functions:



  1. Administer SAN/NAS - Allocate storage disk for data and applications; manage, monitor, maintain and support the storage devices and fiber switches; manage relationship with vendor support contacts and hardware support matrix; alert direct management to any potential issues and existing issues, new versions, features, enhancements, and improvement/optimization opportunities.
  2. Backup and Recovery - Manage, monitor, maintain and support the backup infrastructure systems, policies, and retention periods; understand policies as they directly correlate to IT compliance and governance and manage to those rules; run regularly scheduled tests of the systems to ensure that backup and recovery are in fact functional for operational and disaster data protection.
  3. Incident and Problem Management - responsible for identifying, isolating, and resolving technical incidents and problems (in the context of ITIL) for all systems under management.
  4. Participate in project planning and execution


Competencies:



  • Experience managing a 24x7 enterprise production shop in a fast-paced environment.
  • Expert level experience with EMC and NetApp storage devices and Brocade and Cisco fiber switches.
  • Experience with EMC snaps and replication technologies, BCVs, SRDF, Recover Point, MirrorView.
  • Expert level experience with VMWare technologies as it relates to storage administration.
  • Experience with Symantec NetBackup, tape libraries, deduplication, virtual tape.
  • Experience with SQL and Oracle Database backups and restoration, including backup modules.
  • Experience with Sharepoint backups and restorations, including sub-sites.
  • Manage and govern backup policies, retention periods, legal holds of data expiration, archiving.
  • Experience with testing disaster recovery strategies across multiple datacenters.
  • Experience with production change management policies and procedures, rigorous documentation standards, separation of duties, etc.
  • Experience with following policies, rules and regulations as they pertain to IT Governance.
  • Excellent communication skills are required (both verbal and written) - correspondence and meetings with internal customers will be common. Excellent communication, documentation and presentation skills for delivery to IT, senior management, business units and clients.
  • Highly motivated, self-starter who can take direction but does not need micro-managing.
  • Innovative individual who thinks outside of existing constraints and can bring new ideas and fresh thinking.
  • Ability to analyze problems, propose solutions, and drive issues to resolution.
  • Ability to deal with changing priorities and handle multiple projects.

  • Ability to meet service level agreements and provide high quality customer service.
  • Ability to work well with other business units and support teams to complete project plan tasks, changes, resolve issues, etc.


Minimum Requirements & Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's of Science degree or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years professional experience as a SAN Administrator/Engineer responsible for managing and maintaining critical systems.
  • Enterprise Storage systems, such as EMC SAN, NetApp, NAS.
  • Symantec NetBackup, including tape libraries, deduplication, virtual tape.
  • VMWare, as it relates to storage engineering and support.
  • Fiberchannel, such as Brocade and Cisco director-class platform
  • Extensive experience in a large environment with clustering, operational failover/recovery, disaster recovery and load balancing strategies is required.
  • Experience with Cisco UCS is a plus
