Sr. UX/Visual Design Lead

job summary:

The Lead UX Designer is primarily responsible for creating an overall consistency of information design in a given product. Leads work with product management and feature teams in understanding business requirements for the product and disseminating information to other UX Designers. Leads are responsible for creating navigation structures and information designs, as well as constructing prototypes, storyboards, and mockups to effectively communicate designs to product management and development. The Lead UX Designer works closely with other UX Designers in realizing a properly research, designed, and validated product. The Lead UX Designer is responsible for taking the overall UX vision and translating that into a consistent interaction design and a validated, usability tested interface.

The Lead Designer is also primarily responsible for overseeing the look and feel for the entire suite of products the PSL has. The lead works to translate wireframe interaction designs and storyboards into final visual designs for a desktop software application. The Lead is responsible for realizing visual design goals across the PSL maintaining the overall design vision of products. The Lead Designer also actively performs visual design activities on projects as necessary.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist product management and feature teams in defining functional interaction requirements specifications.
  • Help maintain an overall interaction and design consistency over the entire product
  • Develop mockup / prototype interaction designs, including user interaction models, information architecture, wire frames and screen flows.
  • Conduct rapid iterative usability testing of wireframes, mockups, and prototypes.
  • Translate research findings into design alterations to quickly improve product designs early in the design cycle.
  • Perform validation usability testing to determine whether features and products have met business and usability objectives.
  • Perform data analysis of research findings and synthesize actionable recommendations
  • Produce final user interface designs, adhering to the style and guidance of our staff interaction and UI design team.
  • Manage overall look and feel of multiple products within a given PSL
  • Manage tasks and resources dedicated to visual design
  • Work with UI developers to realize designs and interactions as well as verify that developed code meets visual styling and design.
  • Deliver the designs in a specification document.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in product development teams working on user interface designs.
  • 2+ years of experience in usability and user research methodologies. A background in ethnography or cognitive science is helpful.
  • 2+ years of experience acting as Creative Director for a software product or managing a visual design team.
  • Outstanding communication, organization, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of the software development lifecycle
  • Experience leading user-centered design team.
  • Knowledge of how to best design to solve business and user problems. Ability to understand the needs of customers.
  • Design fundamentals including information design, visual design, industry UI standards for desktop and web-based applications, and ease of use best practices.
  • Experience with Style Guides
  • Experience with design tools such as Axure RP, Balsamiq, Sketchflow, Visio, or Dreamweaver. Visual Studio experience is a plus.
  • Experience with design tools, including Adobe products (Photoshop, Illustrator), Content Management Systems is a plus.
  • In-depth understanding of design concepts such as information design, visual design, industry UI standards for desktop and web-based applications, and ease of use best practices.
  • Bachelor's degree in a UX related area such as psychology, human factors or HCI; a Masters or PhD is a strong advantage.
