Sr Backup Administrator:


Performs installation, maintenance, patching, upgrades and ongoing backup infrastructure server hardware, operating system, software


well as the client portion of installation, configuration, archiving,


backups recovery.


Description:




  • Responsible for day to day operational readiness/care and feeding of backup storage environments. Work closely with backup engineering team as well as OEM backup vendors to maintain overall health of backup infrastructure.
  • Perform daily health status checks of backup environment and address/investigate issues as they arise. If required, open change controls/remedy tickets and submit MOP's if hardware failures result in prolonged outage and require lengthy operations team and or vendor involvement.
  • Perform weekly tape backups and work closely with vendor Iron Mountain to cycle tapes off site per standard disaster recovery procedures/polices.
  • Participate in weekly project management calls, work closely with cross-functional teams to complete installation, acceptance, signoff, and cutover of new backup infrastructure with National Network Operations
  • Work closely/collaboratively with backup engineering team to develop detailed plan for hardware/software upgrades, application of patches, and configuration of the VERITAS NetBackup software for various servers/clients/applications/databases
  • Analyze and resolve production related issues associated with master and media server hardware and software components of the Enterprise Backup environments.
  • Improve backup success by identifying potential areas of concern and communicate them to the backup engineering team for consideration/possible implementation into the production environment.
  • Work closely with NetBackup Engineering team, and respective Platform owners/clients to monitor and verify backup jobs complete as expected. Work to address/resolve failures. Monitor network wide backup infrastructure to ensure capacity demands are sufficient to ensure unexpected traffic spikes can be accommodated without negatively impacting SLA.
  • Perform on-call rotational duties. During these intervals, incumbent will be responsible for responding to and addressing backup system failures during nights and weekends, working closely with operations peers, cross functional teams, as well as the NOCC to resolve system issues/alarms as quickly as possible.
  • At the guidance of backup engineering, perform performance tuning measures according to recommended NetBackup best practices/guidelines and verify against all baseline testing.
  • Effectively manage spend of capital budget. Work closely with backup planning, engineering, and leadership to execute spend plan.
  • Effectively manage vendors and consultants. Work with vendors to obtain quotes, negotiate pricing, and ensure their products and services meet Verizon requirements and standards. Demonstrate/execute sound business practices relative to the procurement of equipment and services.
  • Approximately 5% -10% of time will be required for business travel - predominantly air travel.
  • Must have a flexible work schedule and be able to do occasional night work during maintenance windows, as required.

Qualifications



  • BS degree in computer science, information technology, or equivalent career experience.
  • 3 years' experience with Enterprise NetBackup Environment
  • Strong experience with Unix/Linux administration, network TCP/IP and shell scripting required.
  • Strong experience and knowledge of database backup such as Oracle RMAN, and SQL.
  • Strong experience and knowledge of storage systems such as Data-domain, HP StoreOnce, Quantum DXi, and Symantec appliance.
  • Experience with SAN fabric technologies, Cisco MDS and Cisco Nexus.
  • Experience with thin provisioning, compression, and deduplication.
  • Working knowledge of virtualization technologies such as VMware.
  • Demonstrate general understanding of distributed computing concepts, including the principles of network routing and data center switching.
  • Must be self-motivated, show initiative, and be able to work independently, resolve issues/conflicts and make decisions based on sound business practice.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to drive teams to consensus.
  • Ability and aptitude to develop new skills and support continuous self-improvement.
  • Must be able to work multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal, (oral & written) communications skills required, for internal and external communication, at a varying degree of technical levels.
  • Need to be highly productive and pay close attention to detail.
  • NEC and Mobile Switching Office/Center experience.
