The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC, https://www.nersc.gov/) is looking for a Senior Network Engineer to work with innovative technologies at one of the world's premier supercomputer centers. In this position, you will be part of the team who shares in the design, implementation and on-going maintenance of NERSC’s high performance networks. NERSC’s mission is to accelerate scientific discovery, and our network provides the foundation for NERSC’s high performance compute and data systems which are used by researchers from around the globe. We value diverse viewpoints and contributions from all team members while working towards a common goal, and collaborate with our peers at NERSC, ESnet (http://es.net/) and other High Performance Computing centers.

 

What You Will Do:

• Lead requirement analysis, design, implementation and maintenance of NERSC’s production network infrastructure.

• Deploy automation tools to streamline network management.

• Work closely with Computational, Storage, and Advanced Technologies groups in designing and building network solutions supporting massive compute systems, storage systems and extreme data flows between NERSC and remote user facilities.

• Participate in evaluating, constructing, and configuring the high speed network used for NERSC Supercomputers.

• Design and deploy effective monitoring, logging and auditing of production network equipment.

• Work closely with NERSC Security to ensure secure access to NERSC resources.

• Participate in 24x7 on-call rotation.

• This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

Requirements

What is Required:

• Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 8 years of related experience, or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent experience.

• Experience constructing and designing networks based on customer requirements.

• Demonstrated experience with installation, configuration, testing and operation of network equipment from multiple equipment providers.

• Experience with C, C++, Python or other programming languages.

• Demonstrated troubleshooting and diagnostic experience using end hosts and test equipment.

• Experience with Unix/Linux environments.

 

What We Desire:

• Experience with HPC network technologies such as Aries, IB, OPA, Slingshot etc.

• Experience with SDN and OpenFlow technologies.

• Knowledge of the Linux networking stack (e.g. TCP implementation, routing, name resolution, etc.).

• Experience with workflow accelerators using FPGAs/SmartNICs.

• Ability to assume a leadership role in national and international scientific collaborations, and to write and present results in peer reviewed journals and conferences.
