KEY: Sybase DBA with any DB2 being a plus. Needs to be proficient with Linux (our client has SUSE)

This Sybase DBA will be supporting applications and our client is currently on Sybase 15.7 and will soon be migrating to Sybase 16.0?


Responsible for maintaining database related incidents and requests, fulfilling requests and resolving incidents within Service Level Agreements (SLAs).


-Own, track and resolve all aspects of the database

-Review service related reports (e.g. database backups, maintenance, monitoring) on a daily basis to ensure service related issues are identified and resolved within established SLAs

-Respond to database related alerts and escalations and work with database vendors to come up with strategic solutions to recurring problems

-Provide operational support for our Database Management System (DBMS) services including, but not limited to: restore and recover corrupted databases

-Install and test upgrades and patches

-Develop database management tools and utilities and monitor DBMS infrastructure to ensure continued operation against availability and performance service targets

-Evaluate and recommend new database technologies, tools and techniques that can make our environment better able to meet the demands of 7x24 services

-Analyze and sustain capacity and performance requirements

-Execute demand and capacity management processes to ensure that the infrastructure can meet upcoming project and organic growth demand

-Assist project teams in the proper design and implementation of their database layer

-Provide deep technical expertise during all phases of the projects to ensure that the infrastructure requirements are met in a cost effective manner

-Develop or participate in database upgrades, patching

-Participate in Business Continuity services for Disaster Recovery

-Provide cross-training with other members of Database Services

-Participate in providing 7x24 database supports.


-University degree or equivalent in Engineering, or Computer Science is preferred

-5+ years of SAP(Sybase) ASE and/or DB2LUW experience

-Good organizational and planning skills, results oriented

-Excellent customer services skills, communications, team work and follow-up skills

-Strong knowledge of backups, restores, recovery models

-Strong documentation skills for processes and procedures (creating KBs, run books, topology, etc.);

-Ability to analyze and troubleshoot CPU, memory, I/O and other resource contention

-Significant experience in IT Infrastructure project delivery as well as practical knowledge of application delivery issues and challenges

-Comfortable with MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint

-Demonstrated capability in leading, mentoring and coaching

-Experience in understanding business/technical strategy and ability to communicate these needs to the governing body to ensure projects and services are delivered as agreed upon

-Strong decision and problem solving skills and ability to dig down to the root cause.
