Permanent position: Safety and Health Specialist position in the Western Chicago area at a well established market leader in the chemical manufacturing industry. This role is responsible to provide Safety & Health support to 3 operating sites in Illinois (all within a 1.5 hour drive) and can be located at any of the sites. This role is responsible to lead the company's Safety & Health program implementation and improvements through sharing and facilitating best practices among the different plants in order to maintain consistency. Candidates must have a BS in Safety Engineering, Industrial Engineering or similar engineering or science degree. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is a plus. Candidates must have a minimum of (10) years plant Health and Safety experience within a manufacturing or processing environment to be considered, with at least 5 years resident at an operating site. This is a direct hire role and relocation assistance is available.

Responsibilities for the Safety Specialist

  • Provide technical support to front line leadership on matters related to occupational safety and health compliance, and loss prevention.
  • Analyze the work environment and develop programs design to control, eliminate and prevent injury due to workplace hazards.
  • Lead Health & Safety program implementation improvements and serve as a change agent within the operating environment to improve health and safety performance by working with the organization/management.
  • Must be comfortable in dealing with Health & Safety issues in the operating environment and working with all levels of employees (from front-line employees to senior management).
  • Conducts occupational health and safety risk assessments as appropriate and prioritize/recommend risk reduction and mitigation measures.
  • Conducts field and site inspections to enforce adherence to laws, regulations and employer policies governing occupational safety and health compliance.
  • Develop and manage initiatives to promote a pro-active health and safety culture, including processes designed to increase employee involvement, education and recognition by participation in safety committees, incident investigations training, occupational health matters and compliance auditing.

Requirements for the Safety Specialist

  • BS in Safety Engineering, Industrial Engineer or similar engineering or science degree is required. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is a plus.
  • Minimum of 10 years' of plant H&S experience within a manufacturing, chemical, or processing environment.
  • Must have at least 5+ years hands-on experience as an H&S specialist at a manufacturing site
  • Detailed knowledge of federal, state and local health and safety regulations.
  • Must have good knowledge of OSHA regulations
  • Must be proficient in serving as a change agent within the operating environment
