Permanent position: System Protection / Relay Engineer home based opportunity supporting utility substation projects in the North Carolina and Florida areas. Traveling approximately 75% these positions will be on site during the week providing project coordination & commissioning services associated with substation protective relay modernization efforts. These are salary non-exempt positions with overtime pay. Client has a great benefits package to include profit sharing.

Responsibilities for the Relay Engineer

  • Supervise and perform work in energized utility substations and maintain the reliability & integrity of the in-service elements
  • Typical work scope includes replacement/upgrade of protective relaying systems, substation integration & automation systems, substation control systems and remote terminal unit (RTU) equipment with modern microprocessor-based equipment,
  • Testing the protective functions of protective relaying systems and verifying protective relay logic through the function testing of the relaying systems
  • Configuring integration & automation systems and remote terminal units as well as performing a point-by- point checkout of all SCADA points to appropriate control center
  • Outage coordination with the MPC Transmission & Distribution Control Centers as appropriate
  • Other duties as typical and assigned

Requirements for the Relay Engineer

  • Graduate BSEE/BSEET Engineer and approximately 10 or more years relay experience
  • Strong background and experience in most types of switchgear testing through the 230 kV class and utility grade power transformers up through 500 KV class.
  • Strong computer skills including Mathcad, AutoCAD, Automated testing software, OEM relay software, ETAP, Aspen, SKM and PowerWorld.
  • Knowledge of & experience with the setting & testing of Schweitzer Engineering Labs (SEL) microprocessor-based protective relaying and SEL microprocessor-based integration & automation systems
  • Knowledge and experience with the setting & testing of General Electric microprocessor-based protective relaying systems
  • Knowledge and experience in performing end-to- end testing of transmission line relaying.
