Principal Database Architect

Job Description:

As a Principal Database Architect, you are responsible for architecting scalable and reliable data solutions to move data from multiple ADP's business units in near real time to Data Cloud to serve data products like Analytics, Reporting, Bench Marking, Intelligent Insights and Predictive Models to ADP's clients.

Data Cloud collects data from ADP's business units to data lake composed of Relational databases like Oracle/PostgreSQL and AWS cloud technologies S3, Aurora, RDS & EMR. You will be responsible for providing stable data ingestion platform for component teams working on creating data-driven products for ADP.

The core of your work would be creating data streaming and ingestion solutions that are robust, self-healing and completely automated with minimal or no maintenance overhead.

You will work with several teams of talented Data Engineers, Application & ETL Programmers, Business Analysts and Data scientists who rely on the stable data platform you are managing.

  • Advanced SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases like: Oracle, PostgreSQL and MySQL, Aurora.
  • Experience building and optimizing "big data" data pipelines, architectures and data sets.
  • Experience designing shape monitoring solutions to detect data shape fluctuations, performing root cause analysis of such fluctuations by liaising with internal and external teams.
  • Strong analytical skills related to working with structured and unstructured datasets.
  • Have worked on alerting partner teams on data fluctuations and be able to explain their significance in business terms.
  • Build processes to manage multiple data streams to a central data source.
  • Setup monitoring and alerts on the staleness tolerance of the data, design and implement well engineered solutions to keep multiple data systems in sync.
  • Hands on work experience on event-driven and/or streaming workflows with tools like Kafka and Spark, Kinesis is a must have.
  • Experience with handling REST api based data extraction processes in incremental/batch mode, translating the json to digestible relational structures and design optimizations.
  • Hands on experience with Oracle Golden Gate is a big plus.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Experience in managing data oriented projects for different parts of the organization, while taking into account performance, stability and an error-free operation.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic and demanding environment.

Technical Skills:

  • Specialization: Data Ingestion in On-Premise and Cloud Platforms
  • Relational databases: Oracle, SQL,PL/SQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL (Aurora) and NoSQL databases, DynamoDb, Graphdb like Neo4J
  • Experience with DynamoDB, Redis, Cassandra, MongoDB or similar NoSQL databases
  • Data pipeline and workflow management tools: Airflow, AWS Glue, Luigi
  • AWS cloud services: EC2, EMR, RDS, Redshift, S3, CloudFormation/Terraform, Lambda, Code Pipeline
  • Cloud-managed data warehouse technologies: Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery
  • Stream-processing systems: Confluent Kafka, Spark-Streaming, Kinesis
  • Programming languages: Python, Java, Scala
  • Big data tools: Hadoop, Hive, Spark, Kafka
  • File formats: Parquet, Avro, Protocol Buffer
  • Data Warehousing and Reporting tools like: Tableau, and PowerBi
  • Containerization frameworks and tools: Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes


  • Graduate degree in Computer Science or its equivalent

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and reasoning skills.
  • Excellent documentation and organization skills.
  • Ability to present technical findings in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and fast-changing dynamic environment.
