Purpose of the Job

Under limited direction, assists the manager in performing functions to ensure the divisional needs for performance testing are met. This position will act as the subject matter/technical expert on load/stress/performance testing and functional test automation efforts. As a senior position, duties will include establishing a methodology and testing processes, providing leadership and mentoring to other performance testing/QA resources, and guiding the team in best practices in performance engineering and testing.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Create, document and implement performance testing methodologies and standards.
  • Establish performance and automation testing approaches based on system design, business requirements and SLAs.
  • Develop performance testing strategies.
  • Track industry trends and developments.
  • Initiate and participate in the development and execution of performance test strategies, plans and cases.
  • Develop or assist with the development of automation of stress related tests.
  • Determine estimates of effort and impacts for a variety of solutions.
  • Contribute to technical discussions and decisions.
  • Coordinate complex testing efforts spanning multiple departments.
  • Work with users and team members to define the requirements, project scope, scheduling and implementation of various performance testing projects.
  • Helps in defining, implementing, and monitoring the processes and procedures that need to be put in place to resolve and avoid future performance issues.
  • Works closely with development and infrastructure IT areas to ensure that performance objectives are met for software deliverables, performance issues are exposed and addressed as soon as possible, and causes of performance issues are identifies and eliminated.
  • Manage testing projects with skills that include flowcharting, creating timelines, scheduling and resource planning.
  • Lead activities and the development of test scripts for load, regression, and smoke testing.
  • Communicate with other resources in order to reproduce and understand performance related issues.
  • Work with other resources to troubleshoot performance issues and identify / resolve root cause.
  • Work closely with team members in order to tune and optimize product stability and performance.
  • Work with other team members to maximize re-use of existing tests, equipment, and resources.
  • Assist other groups in performance testing requests.
  • Provide status during regular meetings.
  • Develop, deliver and assist others in delivering test results reports.
  • Produce appropriate management reporting.
  • Create and maintain reporting dashboards using the HP Quality Center tool.
  • Assist with scheduling time and resources to support applicable tests and test automation.
  • Give oral presentations, organize project meetings and conduct demonstrations to various levels of users and management.
  • Provide assistance in the development of installation procedures, training materials and class curriculum as required.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations on new and existing hardware/software technologies.
  • Provide leadership to other programmer/analysts/testers.
  • Manage multiple testing configurations.
  • Provide mentoring to junior staff.
  • The position requires a full-time work schedule. Full-time is defined as working at least 40 hours per week, plus any additional hours as requested or as needed to meet business requirements. Includes on-call rotation duties.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Required Work Experience

  • 5 years of experience with in-depth performance testing.
  • 2 years of experience leading performance teams.
  • 1 year of recent experience scripting web applications.
  • 1 year of experience integrating a performance testing approach into an Agile delivery environment.
  • 1 year of experience in source control systems.

Required Education

  • High-School Diploma or GED in general field of study

Preferred Work Experience

  • 7 years of experience with in-depth performance testing.
  • 3 years of experience leading performance teams.
  • 3 years of recent experience scripting web applications.
  • 2 years of experience in source control systems.

Preferred Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business Administration, or related field

Required Job Skills

  • In-depth experience with HP LoadRunner, HP Quality Center and HP QTP
  • Expert understanding of critical performance engineering concepts, including throughput, residence time, latency, demand, memory and resource utilization
  • Strong experience with performance testing tools
  • Understanding of scripting languages for test automation
  • Strong working knowledge of web technologies, client/server, .NET and database systems
  • Deep knowledge of all phases of test lifecycle
  • Knowledge of underlying web technologies including HTTP, HTML, and JavaScript
  • Knowledge of networking products such as routers, firewalls, and MS Windows Operating systems
  • Knowledge of Software Configuration Management (SCM) practices
