Lead PHP Developer Direct Hire Opening in San Diego (Kearny Mesa)

We are scheduling in person interviews with the Software Development Manager for this opening in our UTC La Jolla office on Wednesday October 12 th .

This hands on lead PHP position will lead a team of between 3-6 PHP Engineers working on new and current applications.


The Lead PHP Developer plays an important role in the organization by performing a number of tasks related to the company's information technology functions. This development leadership role is responsible for planning, designing, coding and supporting Guild Mortgage's web applications in a LAMP stack using industry best practices. Additionally, the lead developer will be self-directed and act as a mentor for the other members of the team on PHP standards and best practices. They will perform code reviews, and optimize Guild's PHP code for scalability and reliability. This position will work in conjunction with architect(s) and other IT leaders in the development of PHP standards and best practices. This position will act as a consultant on PHP code to the IT Operations group.

Essential Functions

  • Develop web-based applications based on business requirements, use cases and functional requirements
  • Collaborate with the existing developers on project scope, design and approach
  • Understand the business well enough to align your development with company goals
  • Drive new features on Guild's core products, as well as optimize and maintain existing application code
  • Work with third party web services and APIs and develop web services APIs as necessary for Guild's systems
  • Document functionality in-line and in the development documentation wiki
  • Present design decisions to Management
  • Identify, investigate, and resolve PHP platform bugs and issues
  • Write, test and debug customizations and new features
  • Implement required security updates and patches
  • Monitor and optimize site usability
  • Work closely with management and architect(s) to design new applications and refactor existing legacy code
  • Lead discussions for project planning sessions
  • Act as a team coach and use expertise to answer questions from teammates
  • Respond to escalated inquiries and problems that cannot be resolved by teammates
  • Support new hire training and work closely with less experienced employees
  • Participate in creation of training materials and job aids, as well as any new rollouts or updates
  • Work to cultivate and distribute technical knowledge throughout PHP team
  • Complete technical research and analysis and share findings and possible solutions with team
  • Review the output of junior-level teammates, and provide subsequent assessments and recommendations to Management
  • Create templates and models used by less experienced teammates
  • Provide analysis and work on special initiatives and projects from Management
  • Perform other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor's degree required, BS in Computer Science or related field preferred
  • 8+ years experience as a software / web developer
  • Expert in LAMP architecture, OOP design patterns and PSR standards
  • Must have experience with Laravel and composer
  • Experience with other PHP frameworks like Zend or Symfony is a plus
  • Unit testing is a must
  • Ability to understand and optimize unstructured "legacy" code
  • Must have experience with git
  • Strong HTML, CSS, JSON/XML, SQL skills
  • Experience with Javascript/jQuery and AJAX
  • Experience with Angular and Bootstrap libraries/frameworks is a plus
  • Experience with AS400/IBM iSeries systems is a plus
  • Self-starter with the demonstrated ability to learn/adapt to new technologies and techniques
  • Ability to document processes and procedures
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required
  • Highly detail-oriented and organized
  • Team-oriented and able to matrix across team(s) as necessary
  • Ability to think critically, including the ability to evaluate facts and data to draw conclusions and determine the long term impact of decisions and associated risks
