Position Purpose:

The Lead DNS Engineer is focused on the technical engineering of the ICANN Managed Root Server (IMRS) (L.ROOT SERVERS.NET), one of the thirteen root name servers, Domain Name Server Security (DNSSEC) Infrastructure for ICANN Managed domains and Top Level Domains (TLDs), Operations of authoritative DNS Servers of ICANN (ns.icann.org, a.iana-servers.net, b.iana-servers.net, c.iana-servers.net, etc), and the Domain portfolio of ICANN

Position Summary:

Responsible for the technical design, development, and implementation of systems required for the operation of critical infrastructure DNS services provided for the Internet by ICANN. Perform systems and network administration, provide subject matter expertise, and participate in public operations engagements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide a technical leadership role across engineering, and operational or cross-functional workgroups and will collaborate in the activities of others

  • Work on and collaborate with management and department leaders on the most complex business issues requiring expert technical knowledge where near and long-term analysis of situations requires an evaluation of intangibles.

  • Contribute to, or when directed, lead DNS Engineering teams by determining and ensuring adherence to project scope, timeline, resources, and budget.

  • Solve unique or complex problems that have a broad impact on the business

  • Create and maintain documentation as it relates to network configuration, network mapping, processes, and service records.

  • Develop, implement and maintain technical strategies, policies, procedures for engineering, systems and network administration, usage and disaster recovery.

  • Act as an in-house expert for the DNS Engineering area of knowledge by conducting research on network products, operations, design, services, protocols, and standards.

  • Interact and negotiate with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure network products and services.

  • As an SME travel to and participate in international technical community meetings and related outreach and knowledge-transfer activities.

  • Other duties as assigned or requested by the Sr Director, Security, and Network Engineering.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

The position of Lead DNS Engineer requires an experienced professional with at least a Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or equivalent field. Successful performance of the prescribed duties, summarized above, also requires strong systems engineering and network administration skills, detailed knowledge of and experience with core Internet and Domain Name System protocols and operations, and technical knowledge of and experience with best current practices for network and systems design and operations.

  • Maintains the highest level of knowledge and experience in systems and network engineering related to DNS Engineering and Root server operations

  • Excellent skills in DNS, DNSSEC, service design, service engineering

  • Demonstrated ability to design and deploy global DNS and DNSSEC infrastructure systems

  • General knowledge of ITIL and service management

  • Specialized knowledge of DNSSEC protocols

  • Experience in public speaking, and presentations to peers and community

  • Acts independently with little to no supervision in a complex environment

  • Participates in teams and workgroups resulting in positive business outcomes

  • Integrates research and emerging technologies into DNS Engineering practices

  • Maintains affiliations and relationships with academic, government, and/or industry technical experts

  • Maintains a good understanding of data security and privacy practices along with data anonymization, tokenization, and masking methods

Education and Experience Requirements
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering

  • Minimum of 8 Years of related industry experience
