POSITION SUMMARY: Network Operations Center Technician


Monitor network cloud operations from the San Diego datacenter using tools and utilities provided by the department. The selected candidate will monitor, identify issues, take corrective actions and document all incidents. Additional responsibilities include conducting routine maintenance on cloud servers, generating performance reports, and research topics related to the proprietary cloud services.


Monitor servers in OmniJoin cloud and take corrective action where appropriate.


Perform routine patch maintenance on servers in the OmniJoin cloud.


Generate performance and load on the OmniJoin network.


Research topics related with OmniJoin network operations


MAJOR PROBLEMS/CHALLENGES


Despite the resilient design of the OmniJoin cloud, there are occasions when isolated incidences will arise. These incidences, if left unattended, will impact the quality of the OmniJoin cloud service, and ultimately the end user. The goal is to address the issue as it happens and maintain the high quality of service of the OmniJoin cloud.


DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY


The Nefsis operations team will supply the network technician with an OmniJoin operator's handbook. The handbook will contain a flow chart of different scenarios with detailed description on how to identify issues, standard troubleshooting procedures, and escalating situations, serving as a guide to the network technician on how to take corrective action.


EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, EDUCATION


2 years + experience preferred.


Preferred candidate should be a CCNA and/or a MCSA (Network Infrastructure).


Knowledgeable of DNS technologies.


Knowledge of TCP/IP and other Internet protocols as well as experience with tools such as Ping, Traceroute, NS Lookup, DIG, Traceroute, Netstat, Netsh, etc.


Knowledge of firewalls and network troubleshooting techniques.


Experience with the following: Windows servers (mainly Windows 2008 or later), Windows desktop and laptop OS as well as Linux.


Must understand Internet design and the fundamentals of routing technology.


Able to monitor and troubleshoot servers in a cloud service.


Demonstrates the ability to write clearly, succinctly and in a manner that appeals to a wide audience toward understanding job directives and instructions. All written communication would be free of errors and convey messages that can't be misinterpreted.


Demonstrates the ability to listen effectively toward understanding and following requirements. Capable of communicating in a fluid, back-and-forth manner that engages other employees, managers, supervisors and executives alike.


Demonstrates the ability to verbally articulate information clearly whether the information be technical or otherwise.


Candidate must have effective analytical, planning, organizational skills and be capable of documenting technical incidences in a basic report format.


Good time management and prioritization skills.


Self-motivation and ability to work with minimal supervision.


Desire to grow and learn new technologies.


Able and willing to work a rotating schedule in a 24x7x365 environment.


Worked with third-party datacenters, facility staff and major internet backbone providers to identify and resolve customer affecting network, hardware and software issues in a timely manner is a plus.


Experienced with virtual environment - VMware is a plus.


Experienced with any network monitoring type applications.


Questions to ask candidates:



  1. Are you familiar with any network monitoring software? If yes please list which products. PRTG, NTOP and SpiceWorks
  2. What is BGP and why is it important? Border Gateway Protocol, it's the protocol used to exchange routing information between different gateway hosts on the internet, for example between ISPs and other business networks,.
  3. What Windows server operating systems have you administrated? Window 2003 and Windows 2008
  4. What is a looking glass server and provide an example of how it can be used to identify network issues? LGS is a server that has the routing information of the organization , i.e ISP, or a specific organization. For example, you can use the information provided by traceroute, and ping to determine any latency or packet loss in your network.
  5. Have you had to submit trouble tickets with Internet service providers in the past? YES
  6. What is a forward trace route? What is a reverse trace route? How does testing both routes help identify issues?
  7. A forward trace route, is tracing packets from your computer to a server or host on the internet, reverse trace route is the other way around. When you do a trace route to i.e yahoo.com, the info you get about how many hops the path is taking to get to the destination?, is there any packet loss? But forward trace route is only half the info, with reverse trace route you get the full picture of what's going on with packets between source and destination.

10. What is your longest duration of employment in a rotating shift-based work schedule? Never done it.


Shifts are as follows: 7:am - 4:pm, 3:pm - midnight, 11:pm - 8:am. Work week is Tuesday - Saturday
