Berkeley Lab’s Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), the fastest science network in the world, is seeking a hands-on manager to lead ESnet’s Network Operations Center (NOC). This position serves as a key member of ESnet’s leadership team and is responsible for the 24/7/365 network operations and monitoring of the ESnet network, peering, and connections to critical Department of Energy (DOE) sites. Outstanding communication skills are essential, as is the ability to collaborate closely with ESnet’s network engineering, infrastructure, and software teams to deliver the processes and tools to maintain a highly reliable and available network infrastructure to support science network and computing requirements.

ESnet provides innovative networking and collaborative services to national research laboratories and other Department of Energy sites, connecting them to research and education networks worldwide, as well as the greater Internet. ESnet is widely-regarded as a technical pioneer, and is currently the fastest science network in the world. Our mission is to accelerate science by delivering unparalleled networking capabilities, tools, and innovations.  As an organization, we are small enough to be agile, but large enough to offer rewarding challenges on a global scale.

What You Will Do:

• Oversee and direct all aspects of the 24/7/365 mission critical Network Operations Center including, planning, designing, implementing, deploying, supporting and maintaining functions required for monitoring the state of the ESnet network.

• Serve as a member of ESnet’s leadership team in developing and implementing organization-wide vision, strategies, plans, and programs.

• Develop and manage ESnet’s NOC Group priorities, in alignment with ESnet’s strategic objectives and tactical plans including scoping, prioritizing, and project-managing technical projects.

• Oversee the management of service level agreements (SLAs) with vendors and service providers. Manage and oversee the maintenance of all assets of the network.

• Develop policies and procedures for all Network Operations Center environments.

• Provide leadership, line management supervision, and mentorship of the NOC Group.

• Participate in ESnet outreach activities through presentations, and direct contacts with staff in peer and customer organizations.

• Maintain a work environment that embraces diversity, fosters creativity and innovation, and ensures that DOE and Laboratory rules and policies are observed.

• Some travel (possibly including international destinations) will be required.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on June 3, 2020.

Notes:

• This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

• This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

• Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
