Energy Sciences Network (ESnet, http://es.net/) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is looking for a Director of Systems & Software Engineering to lead multiple managers and technical teams in building ESnet’s next-generation network software service portfolio using state-of-the-art technologies to operate the ESnet network, as well as introduce next generation systems and software to enhance the research community we support.

ESnet provides innovative networking and collaborative services to national research laboratories and other Department of Energy sites, connecting them to research and education networks worldwide, as well as the greater Internet. ESnet is widely-regarded as a technical pioneer, and is currently the fastest science network in the world. Our mission is to accelerate science by delivering unparalleled networking capabilities, tools, and innovations.  As an organization, we are small enough to be agile, but large enough to offer rewarding challenges on a global scale.

What You Will Do:

• Provide overarching leadership and management of multiple engineering leaders – whose responsibilities include building state-of-the-art network software & system services using new technologies while sustaining existing operational services.

• Develop and manage ESnet’s software engineering and data center team priorities, in alignment with ESnet’s strategic objectives and tactical plans.

• Contribute as a key member of ESnet’s executive team, working directly with ESnet’s Director and other members of the leadership team, to develop and implement organization-wide vision, strategies, plans, and programs.

• Work closely with the diverse ESnet user base to provide excellent service while ensuring short and long term requirements are understood and met.

• Recruit, coach and mentor staff, including managers and engineers.

• Maintain a work environment that embraces diversity, fosters creativity and innovation, and builds an atmosphere of accountability to ensure that DOE and Laboratory rules and policies are observed.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, for full consideration, please apply by close of business on Feb 28, 2020.

• This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

• This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

• This position has the option of working remotely, but limited to individuals residing in the United States. For local candidates, work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.

• Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values at Berkeley Lab. Our excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values. Successful candidates for our faculty positions will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion.
