The Institute for Advanced Computer Studies at the University of Maryland (UMIACS) is an interdisciplinary research organization focused on high performance computing, data intensive computing, and visual computing. The UMIACS technical staff is responsible for the computing environments for our 14 labs and centers and the research programs of our 70 faculty, including the students and staff who support them.


Responsibilities are to provide support for sponsored research activities in data intensive computing (DIC) with significant focus on deep learning. Tasks will include, but are not limited to deployment and maintenance of the DIC resources/infrastructure, patching and support of systems and applications, building highly customized software environments and interacting with other technical team members to support unique computing environments.


A Bachelor of Science degree (or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience) and a minimum of two (2) years of hands-on experience supporting DIC or high performance computing resources are required. Applicants must also have expertise in enterprise Linux systems administration and configuration management and highly proficient software building skills in UNIX/Linux. Finally, qualified candidates must have the ability to establish strong working relationships with colleagues, strong analytical and problem solving skills, and excellent oral and written communication skills.


The following experience and expertise is preferred:

  • Experience in SLURM, Hadoop/Spark and Condor computing platforms.
  • Expertise with deep learning toolkits such as Caffe, Tensorflow, Torch or similar software toolkits.
  • Integration experience with network-attached storage systems.
